These are the 3 steps to silence a noisy drain

It's not surprising to hear your home "talking back" to you as smart speakers and assistants increase in popularity. But, unless your home has the technology that we don't know about, it shouldn't make strange sounds from your sinks.

If you hear a gurgling sound coming from your sink's drain, you need to determine which sink or sinks it is, as well as the source of the noise. You can also remove blockages in the drain pipes or venting and call a plumber if the problem persists.

Step 1: Identify the sinks that are gurgling

Although it may seem simple if you have already heard the gurgling sound, it is important to evaluate the situation before making any conclusions about a solution. It is important to note the type of sink you have. This could help you determine what's going on in your drain. Kitchen sinks are more prone to oil and food scraps clogging them, while bathrooms sinks can get hair clogged.

You should also check to see whether any other drains or sinks are making the same noise. It could indicate a problem with your sewer line if you hear a gurgling sound throughout your home.

Step 2: Clear common blockages and investigate them

The most common cause of gurgling sinks is a blockage or clog in the drainage system. These are two easy places to check.

  • P-trap - The P trap is the curving part of the drain pipe that is usually found under the sink. The trap collects water in order to keep sewer gases from getting into the home. It is also the most likely spot for a clog. A partial blockage in the P-trap can cause water to stop flowing and gurgling. You can either remove the P-trap yourself and remove any blockage easily, or hire a plumber to snake the drain.
  • Vent -A vent should be located on the roof of your home. This creates airflow and prevents a vacuum. Gravity cannot push waste through the drain pipes and into the sewer system. When water flows through the drain, it can cause a gurgling sound when air gets trapped in the pipe. You can access the roof by climbing up and finding the plumbing vent.

Step 3: If in doubt? Call a plumber

If you are lucky, you may be able fix the problem yourself. A gurgling faucet is often a sign of a minor issue with your plumbing. If you are unable or unwilling to find the cause of the gurgling, it might be time to call a licensed plumber. It's possible that the problem is more serious and hidden, such as a blocked sewer line. You should not use too much force to unclog drains. This could cause damage to older pipes.

The sink you are using is a curving section of pipe. The main purpose of this pipe is not to just trap undesirable hair and grease beneath the kitchen sink. Although it is often used to do so, the curve allows a volume of water to accumulate and create a barrier to ensure that sewer gas isn't permitted to flow freely into your home and smudge the sink.

It is important to winterize your hose bibbs as temperatures drop. We receive many calls each spring about bursts or broken pipes in basements and crawl spaces. When homeowners turn on their hoses, they discover that these pipes are present. They don't realize that the basement is being sprayed with water while running their hose outdoors.
