What's the Perfect Temperature for Your Water Heater

The right temp for the water heater could seem a little like Goldilocks getting the ideal mattress. Too hot, and you risk scalds and burns. Too cold, and you'll feel cold while showering.

We're happy to announce that today we'll make sure that you can enjoy hot water that is just right and also saves cash on your energy costs.

The ideal temperature for traditional tank water

Tank-based water heaters typically come with an average setting of 140ºF. This is a good temperature; however, it's likely to be higher than the typical homeowner requires. It's also too high when you have an elderly family member or you have children living in your house since it's hot enough to cause scorching water that can lead to some burns.

In order to increase the effectiveness and safety of your home's water heater, the most common recommendation is that you set your temperature to 120ºF. This will avoid dangerous burns and allow you to enjoy warm water enough for a relaxing shower or dishwashing.

Then why are so many water heaters set to 140ºF in the first place? Manufacturers set their standard temperatures high due to a variety of reasons. Most likely, they do not have to pay the energy bill! Reducing your water's temperature by 10 to 20 degrees will help you save up to 10% of your energy bill.

Another reason that your water heater has been set to 140ºF is to lower the possibility of legionella bacteria. This is the bacteria that cause Legionnaires disease. If you're suffering from a weak immunity, then it may be better to keep your water heater at 140ºF. If not, it is in good health to set the temperature to 10 to 20 degrees lower.

The sink you are using is a curving section of pipe. The main purpose of this pipe is not to just trap undesirable hair and grease beneath the kitchen sink. Although it is often used to do so, the curve allows a volume of water to accumulate and create a barrier to ensure that sewer gas isn't permitted to flow freely into your home and smudge the sink.

It is important to winterize your hose bibbs as temperatures drop. We receive many calls each spring about bursts or broken pipes in basements and crawl spaces. When homeowners turn on their hoses, they discover that these pipes are present. They don't realize that the basement is being sprayed with water while running their hose outdoors.
