It's quite common for a faucet handle to spin, and it can happen often. It is possible to fix the problem for as little as $20 by using a few screwdrivers and an adjustable wrench.
Wear and tear on the faucet cartridge is what usually causes a spinning faucet handle. The handle and the cartridge work together to regulate the water flow. The handle will feel loose when the cartridge is removed.
Here are five steps that will help you fix your problem.
1. Turn the water off.
Just below the faucet, you will find the valves for turning off the water supply to your sink. Turn the handle clockwise to turn off the water from the faucet. While you work on a bathtub, you might need to turn off the water supply in your home. Cover the drain to ensure that no screws or other important items are buried.
2. Remove faucet handles or cover plates.
Depending on where the faucet cartridge is located, either the handle or cover plates will need to be removed. Although the handles can generally be unscrewed by hand with a screwdriver, the cover plates must be removed using a flathead. A Phillips or allen wrench may be required to remove the connecting screw.
3. Removing locking nut
You will find a locking nut to secure the faucet cartridge. You can remove this nut using a pipe wrench. A small brass screw may be found on top of your cartridge. You should keep this as some replacement cartridges may not include a screw.
4. Remove faucet cartridge.
After the locking nuts are removed, the faucet cartridge will lift out. Use pliers to help if the faucet cartridge is difficult to lift. You can take your old cartridge to the hardware store if you haven't yet bought the new cartridge. This will allow you to compare sizes.
5. Replace the faucet cartridge.
Once you have the correct replacement cartridge for your faucet, install it and follow the same steps as before, working backwards. Next, turn on the water again to verify your work.
